Collagraph is an open plate making process, where you build up the plate by gluing paper, texture, fabric and other materials onto a piece of matt board, thin board, plastic, or other rigid substrate. Part of the plate can be inked like an etching by wiping the ink into the plate and the higher raised surface areas like a relief block using a brayer. It is an affordable plate making process and scales up very easily to create larger works than the traditional metal plate alternatives. In this workshop, students will spend the first day making their collagraph plates and the 2nd day printing their plates on DGA’s etching presses. Wiping and inking techniques such as Viscosity will be demonstrated.

Students provide printmaking paper such as 1618, BFK Reeves, Arches Cover, or Pescia (or may be purchased in the shop), and any materials wanted for gluing onto plates such as dried plants, thin plastics, fabric, lace, cut paper, thread, etc. Materials to be glued onto the substrate should not have any sharp edges.
