About Us

Discover Graphics Atelier: Education, Community, Makerspace

Discover Graphics Atelier, established in 1983, is a 501(c)(3) educational non-profit.

Serving our community, we are a place where art is created and the knowledge and understanding of printmaking is passed on to the next generation of artists and lay people alike.

Since its inception, DGA has offered regular instruction in stone and plate lithography, relief printmaking, collograph, monotype, and in the multiple possibilities offered by the whole range of etching and intaglio techniques. We also provides facilities in which advanced students and proven printmakers can pursue their art in a supportive environment.

At Discover Graphics our mission is simple, to teach and foster the art and skill of printmaking.

Our Founders

Penelope Barringer Allan Kaneshiro

Penelope Barringer founded Discover Graphics with Allan Kaneshiro 1983. The brainchild of two experienced printmakers and teachers, Ms. Barringer and Mr. Kaneshiro drew on their experience at the National Museum of American Art to create a vibrant and supportive environment for printmakers of all levels.

Following Mr. Kaneshiro’s retirement in 2003, Ms. Barringer remained as the managing director of Discover Graphics and assumed complete responsibility for the atelier and its programs, and did so until her death in 2016. She taught lithography, etching, and monotype classes as well as offering specialized intensive workshops in etching, monotype, and collagraph techniques.

She had previously worked at the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, as Assistant Printmaker and at Union Printmakers, Inc. as Assistant Director.

Mrs. Barringer earned her BFA degree from Syracuse University in fabric design in 1968. She began printmaking in 1972, learning the craft through study and collaboration with numerous teachers and such distinguished printmakers as Joseph Goldyne, Robert A. Nelson, and Lynd Ward.

Her generous spirit lives on through the mission of Discover Graphics.
