About Discover Graphics Atelier
Discover Graphics Atelier, located in the Torpedo Factory Art Center, offers printmaking courses and workshops in collaboration with the Art League. It also provides facilities in which advanced students and proven printmakers can pursue their art in a supportive environment. Incorporated as a 501(C) 3 non-profit educational institution, Discover Graphics is the brainchild of two experienced printmakers and teachers, Penny Barringer and Allen Kaneshiro.
Drawing on their experience at the National Museum of American Art and on the generosity of friends, they opened the printshop in the Torpedo Factory in 1983. Since then numerous printmakers in various media have used it as their choice of studio.
Regular instruction has been offered in stone and plate lithography, in relief printmaking, in collograph, in monotype, and in the multiple possibilities offered by the whole range of etching and intaglio techniques.
Celebrating it's 25th anniversary year Discover Graphics operates under the direction of Penny Barringer, who assumed complete responsibility for the atelier and its programs upon Allen Kaneshiro's retirement in 2003. Penny Barringer has created and shown lithographs and monotype prints in the Washington area for more than 30 years. Besides serving as Director of Discover Graphics, over the past 20 years she has taught lithography, etching, and monotype classes for the Art League, Inc. as well as offering specialized intensive workshops in etching, monotype, and collagraph techniques. She previously worked at the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, as Assistant Printmaker and at Union Printmakers, Inc. as Assistant Director.
Mrs. Barringer earned her BFA degree from Syracuse University in fabric design in 1968. She began printmaking in 1972, learning the craft through study and collaboration with numerous teachers and such distinguished printmakers as Joseph Goldyne, Robert A. Nelson, and Lynd Ward. She also has studied enameling with Dorothea Stover and Don Viehman, metalwork with Gretchen Raber and Nick Barnes.
Mrs. Barringer works primarily in lithography, monotype printmaking and cloisonné enamel jewelry. Her flowing organic images are inspired by natural forms.
